Removing the Caprail Forever!

The cap rail has long been a source of leaks and frustration for most Pan Oceanic boat owners. The teak cap rail on Wildthing was 30 years old and had deteriorated to the point it had to be replaced or removed.  In the spirit of reducing maintenance and enjoying more time for sailing the removal option was selected.

It took a couple of days work with the saws all and the caprail was history.  Once removed it was found that there were gaps and crack between the hull and deck joints.  It was no wonder it leaked so much.

The hull/deck joint was ground out and first filled with fiberglass. The photos below show the progress made so far on glassing it over. A 18oz biaxial cloth was used to encapsulate the hull an deck joint using epoxy resin. Fairing with Awlfair is now taking place in preparation for painting with Awlgrip and applying non skid.
